All right, story number one. Anthropic co-founder warns AI is moving too fast. Is the anthropic co-founder warning us of issues or a disgruntled employee? Let's head out to our Tech Time Insider Jennifer Merrick for more on the story.

Thanks, Nathan. Here's what we learned from Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark. And it's one of the strongest warnings we've heard from inside the AI industry. Clark says AI development is accelerating so fast that we're approaching a point where systems could start improving themselves without human oversight. His exact words were the industry has a gas pedal, but no brake pedal. Right now, Anthropics Claude is already running on code that is 80% written by the AI itself. And Clark believes it could reach 100% within two years. Something he says would have huge implications for safety, jobs, and national security. Now back to the studio.

Jennifer, thank you very much. Clark argues that the government must step in with real oversight and regulation. Not to stop innovation, but to ensure humans remain in control as AI systems become autonomous and more capable. So this is kind of a big deal. So when you have AI, this I mean, this is the same thing. This is the whole story of how like Skynet takes over in the Terminator movies, right? So if you have AI that starts writing its own code for its own self, there is a point where the original code will be changed completely. It's already done that. And it's 80% of the way there. So we've still got 20% human intervention.

Yeah, if we go with the whole adage of humans only use 10% of their brain, AI's already ahead of humans human development. So you know. There you go. All right.

Well, uh the wording comes as anthropic prepares for one of the most anticipated IPOs in tech history. So this is interesting. We have OpenAI's IPO coming on up. We have Anthropics IPO. So we have two public offerings of AI companies, but each of them are expecting to hit near the trillions in value upon that. We are going to create in the matter of a couple months two companies that are each worth a trillion dollars on paper. Now Clark highlighted the rise of autonomous AI agents, bots capable of performing tasks on their own, which he believes will reshape the job market. Many recent tech layoffs decided that the tools are being used for replacement of human engineers.

I I feel like Clark should be my bromance guy because he's saying stuff I've already been saying this whole time. Okay, so you're so so Clark is your guy and Altman's my guy? No, I didn't say that. I said maybe he should be. Okay, I think he should be. The problem here I'm having with this is that he's he's saying it's it could reshape the job. It's already reshaping the job market. You think so? Yeah.

Okay, all right, okay. Well, he has public warnings that are famed on policy concerns, not personal grievance. So he's not a former ex-employee. He's not a disgruntled employee, he does not have an axe to grind. He's actually considered a respectable leader in AI policy. So this isn't someone that's just coming on out and saying, Hey, I got I got pissed off at everybody, and I'm gonna then come on out and say we should do this. This is somebody that's actively in this world at C.

This warms my heart a little bit. I have some hope in the human race again. So see this, and there you go. There's that actual person out there who can make change who's actually saying that we should we should do what I've been hollering about here for for three years.

Again, we're just we're just two years ahead of the mainstream media. That's right. Weeks ahead, but I think we're like two years ahead. All right. AI's potential is enormous, he says. But without a way to slow it down, the world may not be ready for what's coming next. All right. What are you talking about? What could be coming next? AI talking to AI and AI sending stuff to AI and AI making the I I can't wait for another AI HR bot.

Roman Telescope Launches Ahead Of Schedule

A new space telescope is coming out. Did you know that? I did not. What what what's going on for space? Roman the NASA's Roman Space Telescope is ahead of schedule. It has announced that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is officially scheduled to launch on August the thirtieth of 2026, which is ahead of its timeline by nearly eight months now. This is not Nancy Grace, the the woman on the TV. Okay.

This is not the same. You thought it was at first. You did at first. You thought at first that maybe it could it would have been anywhere.

Oh yeah, I was I asked I asked why is a telescope being named after the lady on the criminology show. Okay, there you go. She's widely regarded as the mother of Hubble for her foundational work in planning and securing funding for the space observatory. Engineers at NASA Scottard recently completed the final inspection of Roman 7.9 foot primary mirror, confirming perfect alignment after vibration environmental testing. The telescope is now being prepared for transport to the Kennedy Space Center where it will undergo final checks, fueling, and integration into a SpaceX Falcon heavy robot that hopefully will lift off from the pad. Once in space, Roman will travel to the Sun-Earth L2 point, joining the James Webb Space Telescope with a field of view a hundred times larger than Hubble's. Roman will capture enormous sections of the sky at once, giving astronomers unprecedented data on dark energy, galaxy formation, and how common solar systems like ours that may exist out there. NASA says the mission will deliver never before seen views of the universe and open new opportunities for t scientific discovery worldwide. I feel like I'm having some Nathan problems with my pronunciation this morning. A decade beyond its original one-year plan. Maven provided the first long-term measurements of how Mars lost its atmosphere over billions of years, shaping our understanding of the planet's climate history. NASA called the mission a landmark achievement that will continue influencing Mars research for years to come. And that's all the tech news in the world of NASA that we can talk about today.

Wearable AI Badges And Privacy Fears

Microsoft is testing a new AI-powered hardware design for office workers, including a small desktop cube and a wearable AI access badge that hangs on a lanyard like an employee ID. The badge has a touch screen, voice controls, and even a camera. No, are you serious? That's serious. Letting workers interact with AI agents without opening a laptop. So it's so you're an employee that just goes around with this device on you capturing everything. So why even have an employee there?

I mean, that's like a robot, right? Well, uh Didn't we already have a company that tried to make an AI integrated pin that you put on your chest? And it would tell you information. So there was a Kickstarter.

There's a Kickstarter that I invested in, and then and then that all of a sudden didn't quite work well.

Was that the happy little little companion thing that that was just completely dumb?

I want to know what's going to happen in the break room. Are we going to have these little AI badges talking to themselves? Are they going to be reporting on what the employees are talking about?

Yeah, are they going to have their own little gossip channel that they do like here's office gossip going to the city?

Is it there to watch how many keystrokes the person is actually typing out on this computer? Oh, or maybe it doesn't need to do that anymore either.

AI is here. Only a few hundred employees are testing this out, so don't worry, Mike. It's not like everybody has.

The company says that the new form factor for using AI on the go. Now, Microsoft's been really, really successful at these types of devices. So let's go through the Microsoft Zune. Dun dun dun.

Let's talk about the maybe they should call Meta and get some uh Ray bands instead with the with the Yeah, the the HoloLens.

Nathan Mumm 11:46

That was their VR thing. Dun dun dun. The discontinuous. So everything that Microsoft ever does. The only thing that has ever worked is the surface. And they spent they spent billions of dollars. They did a good job. Other people come on up with what to build for the surface. Yes, they did. I still have my service. So there you go. Now Google is also trying again with smart glasses. Remember the Google smart glasses? I remember. So we have smart glasses that are also trying to be a part of it. Now, now the badge can take photos, understand the user's surrounding, and connect directly to Microsoft AI tools, but the built-in camera raises privacy concerns similar to other AI wearables now hitting the market. No, wait, didn't I just mention that? There you go. For now, Microsoft says the devices are just an early concept. So don't worry. But it's clear the company wants AI to follow its workers everywhere.

I want to know who who they're giving it. Are they giving it to those workers that are really like bright and shining stars in the company? Or are they giving it to the ones that like visit HR all the time?

Well, I just still say, what has your badge become? An HR badge? I mean, I just I can't wait. Like I was I was saying, I want uh AI to take over HR. And then all of a sudden just start going through people that are like lazy and aren't showing up to work and just start sending out emails. You're fired, you're fired, you're fired. You know, that that would be that would be one of the funniest things ever.

Apple Ends Intel Mac Support

all right. Last story here. Story number four Apple unveils iOS 27 and the macOS 27 as Tim Cook prepared his final Apple Worldwide Developer Conference keynote on Monday. Apple wrapped up the WWDC. Uh Tim Cook delivered the final keynote as the CEO, and he went out with a full slate of software announcement. The spotlight was on the iOS 27 and the Mac 27 bolt arriving this fall.

Is this really a story that do we really even need to know that that iOS because you know in two months iOS 2030,000 is gonna come out. Well, they come out every year with normally a new OS.

The big thing though is this is gonna end support for all of your Intel Macs. Oh, well, I don't have those. So if you have an Intel Mac, so I have Intel Macs. I have a ton of Intel Macs. So any of the Intel Macs are no longer gonna be able to get upgrades. They're gonna be stuck at Mac OS 26 Tahoe. Apple says it will continue to do security updates for three more years.

So you have three more years on your Intel-based Mac, and then all of a sudden, boom, it's gonna go. Now, this is actually going to reference what we do in This Week in Technology. Okay. Well, that's awesome. But um can't AI like do my security updates now? Well, like it can. And then it goes and publishes it out. Shouldn't it be able to support all my previous things that don't have support anymore?

Well, Apple introduced a major upgrade to Siri, so this is their fourth reboot of Siri. We'll see if this one works. The company says the new Apple intelligent platform, Siri, now behaves more conversational, like an AI assistant. So kind of like Alexa has for the last four years. Yeah, but Alexa, Alexa's on like Gen 2 of this, and Apple's still trying to hit it out of the ballpark on version one.

Maybe they should talk about my talk to Microsoft, and you know, they had Zune and you know, all that stuff. The Halo lens and all those things.

Okay. Well, what's interesting about this is every time I'm driving and I'm on my iPhone and I ask it to look up something, it literally tells me I can't do it you're driving. I'm trying to talk to this device. Every other device I have can do.

I know, it's the dumbest thing. Um, I have been yelling at my Alexa more and more because she I've been referenced it as a she. She cannot get it right ever. She gives me more bad information than than Google does.

Well, speaking of Google, oh no the Google Gemini is the backbone of Apple's AI assistant, so look for it to crash and tell you incorrect information. Well, that that ends. I'm not a big fan of uh Google Gemini. I I I know that it's uh I I I don't either choose Anthropic or OpenAI. Either use Claude or or Grok or use grok. Or you can use grok too, but yeah, Google Gemini, like late. Is Google Gemini better than grok? No, Google Gemini is kind of not really good at all, but everybody's using it because it all comes free. So all right. Well, that ends our top technology stories of the week. Uh, about what we have and the whiskey we're tasting. All right, Mark, what are we tasting today? It's scotch.

Well, it's an interesting one, Mike. It's Arbeiki 1794 Highland Rye, single-grain scotch. From Arbeiki's website. We combine our unique use of rye with new charred American oak and leave this lively oak to do its magic. The result is a highly original whiskey that fires the imagination and the senses with exciting flavors and aromas. The new charred American oak barrel complements the flavors of rye, wheat, and malted barley grains, imparting rich color and deep flavor. So the palate brings malted cookies, followed by dry orange peel, black tea, and spice and ripe fruits come to life. It finishes with peppery, toasted oak, and an elastic body, which is a column distillation, gives an elongated finish. Now, this is from our Beaky Distillery, and they are located in Lunan, Angus, Scotland. Classification is a Scotch whiskey, but it's technically can also be considered a rye whiskey because it is 60% winter rye, 25% spring malted barley, and 15% winter wheat. It's age a minimum four years, 96 proof, and it goes for about a hundred and twenty dollars for a 700 milliliter. However, when I did a search online, I found it discounted down to about $30 on some sites.

Well we'll talk about some uniqueness that this distillery does in the mumbles, and it's it's a fairly unique whiskey. As we saw, it's a Scotch whiskey, but it's not the traditional hundred percent malted scotch or even a blended scotch. It's a it's a rye whiskey, but it just happens to be made in Ireland.

Uh it does not have a camera, it does not do anything with that. But what it does is take notes from meetings and then change them into an action plan or something like that, so that you can gather all of the information that is talked about around you, make it into something that you can send to the team and make sure that things actually get followed up on and worked.

So now we gotta get all the information on this because now I I uh we did talk a little bit on our pre-show, uh, because we do uh for everybody that listens to the shows, they know this. Throw them on the ground and kick them around. Yeah, and so just kind of like Saturday, kind of like Saturday Night Live when you do a pitch type of deal and everybody comes on in and pitches different stuff for this. Um, we did not have a gadget until late. So this is new for Mike because we actually changed it last night just specifically for this. But tell me how many backers, where it is, where is the company located, and how many pledges, and hopefully it's not like one of our devices that it was fake.

Um, it is their first project, so we do have to be a little concerned over that. But today, just while waiting to be on this segment, I've watched it go from about 550 packers up to 576. So there's definitely a lot of a lot of interest in this. Uh, it is available until June 26th. So if anybody wants to hop on and do their research and get a feel for it, I highly recommend it. Uh there's a a few of the super early birds left, although not many. You can get uh, I believe everything, so the whole device for about a hundred dollars. Or if it goes run out, there's still a fair amount of early birds, which is about a hundred and twenty.

Okay. All right. So there's a couple couple early birds that are available there. So what does this do? I yeah, we did talk about this device kind of for Microsoft is testing something. So it doesn't have the camera built into it. What what would be a feature in here that you would actually use that would be really uh adapt to and and really important to you to use that you think would would make a difference?

I think the note-taking feature is the best, in my opinion. It's something that you can then translate into, as I said, outlines, you can translate it into action plans, you can even translate it into just a simple to-do list to go through and make sure that everything is checked off.

How long is the battery life or how long is the memory for that? So this is what I've always worried about, right? So if I go into a meeting and I have an AI taker for notes and it listens and it captures the notes and then sends out the information, I normally on my phone or or device that I have, I normally only get like a maximum of 10 hours, which is uh good enough for a day, but uh the but that pretty much at the end of the day, I better download everything and then start on over again and start on over. Do we know how long this will last, how much it has the ability, so I don't have to worry about that? Is there any AI that's tied with it specifically?

It's actually tied with quite a bit of AI. Um it tends to lean on something called superclaw, which is related to open claw. Uh it also connects everything to the web, so you're able to actually store it on cloud. You've got about 40 gigs worth of storage, which is quite a bit of information for both audio and written files.

Okay. All right. So, you know, what's interesting is these devices now, before uh you if you were to record a conversation, right? Uh that was like you had to tell everybody in the room, you had to say certain stuff that's going on. With these new devices that everybody's gonna be wearing soon, uh how do you disclose that you're recording everything? How are you gonna have say, hey, I got this device around my neck and I am recording you? And and and what what what is gonna happen with this?

I mean, from a legal perspective, and I am not a lawyer, so please don't take my legal advice for anything more than it's worth. Uh you still would need to inform people in most states. Okay. There are some states that have one party rule where as long as one person knows it's being recorded, you're okay.

So instead of meeting someone at a bar, they're at the gym on Friday night hoping their biceps will do the talking. That's not even a thing. That's not even a thing, man. Everybody's hollering about that too. Okay. Meanwhile, Hinges AI is over here writing profile prompts like tell them about your hobbies. Because apparently that's too much pressure. I think I think we've gotten to this point. Yes, dating is hard. I get it. I mean, it was hard when we were young. Yeah, we were but we were also a little bit social too, right? I I think we were more har we were more hardcore. Okay. Because we didn't have all this stuff that could do stuff for us. That makes sense. But when the AI is making the first move for you, alrighty then. Is that really dating? Or is that or is that your algorithm that's dating? Uh I think it's your algorithm that was dating, right? Now we're gonna have algorithms that are dating other algorithms from other dating profiles. So your profiles are gonna be dating, but you're not ever gonna meet the person that's on the other end of that profile. All right. Yeah, there we go. See how mesmerizing that was?

Snow Leopard Then And Now

And now, let's look back at this week in technology.

All right. We're coming back to June 8th, 2009. Apple introduces the Mac OS X Snow Leopard. An update famous for the flashy new features. Now, Snow Leopard featured speed, stability, and efficiency. It was actually something really great because it actually reduced the size of the OS previously. So unlike every other OS that decides to go larger and larger, they actually compounded the code and made it smaller. This was a big release because what this did is this was Apple's moving away from the power PC processors and completely transitioning to the Intel chipset. So this is a bad move. Yeah, well, fast forward to today. Apple is now making another historic shift with the announcement of the Mac OS 27. Apple's officially ending support for the Intel-based Mac. The very architecture, Snow Leopard Embraced, is now being put to the end. After 20-year chapter, Mac is now going back to the back and shooting it. It's going back to the silicon-based processor that they once did with PowerPC. So this is what happens. They come around, PowerPC isn't competing with Intel. Mac says, you know what, we're going to go start working with Intel. Now Intel is struggling, and so they created their own chipset for the silicon that they have now. And they're going back. So it just takes 20 years. And then in 20 years from now, they're going to be going to whatever version of the code.

No, and so as much as Mickey Mouse is the icon that he decided to draw on his train ride back from New York, as he was pretty much had just lost Oswald the Rabbit, which was his original icon. Um it's interesting that Mickey is limited in all the cartoons that they produce. I mean, they had DuckTales with Donald Duck and everything that was out there. There's very few Mickey Mouse centric was not with Donald. DuckTales was Scrooge McDuck. Well, Scrooge and Donald. Donald was the the uncle and the Huey Dewey and Louie were all the nephews that they came around, right? Yep. I mean DuckTales was like show. Okay, all right.

So today, brothers David, Ian, and John Sterling are the visionaries behind our Beaky, a true field distillery. Now, our Beaky is also looking to the future, just like tech time. Instagram had a major slip-up this week as the new AI support bot accidentally made it easier for hackers to break into people's account. Here's what happened: the hacker used a VPN to pretend they were in the victim's location. They went through Instagram's account recovery steps and simply asked the AI support to change the email on the account. Yeah, I said okay. Sent the verification code to the hacker, and from there the hacker could reset the password and take over the account. Even high profile accounts were hit, including an Instagram post that was uh sent out from President Barack Obama, which briefly posted strange political content that said that he loved Donald Trump before being recovered. Security researchers also reported their passwords being changed without their knowledge. The bigger issue? Many users say they can't reach a human for help. And at these online companies, I know that is correct. You can always get a salesperson, but if you ever need anything with your account, you can pretty much forget it. So guess what? We have AI to help us take control or lose control of the system. Now, Meta says the flaw is fixed and affected accounts are being secured. What a great thing. Yeah, thanks, Meta. Yeah, we screwed up. Oh yeah, oops, we shouldn't have done that. Guess what? Oops, sorry. Guess what? It's a free system.

All right, Hasbro, please stop doing AI wrong with our childhood. Now, Hasbro's latest brainstorm is to turn Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Mr. Potato Head into AI chatbots. And if that sounds like a terrible idea, that's because it is. The company's new sixth wall AI studio promises to serve these characters with the thinking and talking that is iconic for each of these characters. But now they're gonna help you with AI. So just think of that. If I wanted to go to Hasbro's site, I can get Optimus Prime and he can help me be my talk buddy. Roll on. All right, here's the hero in the story. Mr. Potato Head didn't even originally talk when it came on out. But now we decided after they put him in Toy Story and he had a voice that we're now gonna have Mr. Potato Head have a voice and help with AI. Let me just tell you this. Are they gonna use the voice actor? They did. They're using the voice actor that's passed away. Really? So they so they had the use of his voice. They have Optimus Prime and Megatron's very close simulation voices.
